Lisa Massie is Havergal College’s Director of Facilities and has been working on the Master Plan since its inception. She works closely with the construction team at Buttcon Limited to oversee Havergal’s renovations and help ensure a smooth transition for faculty, staff, students and parents during the new build.
Lisa has been with Havergal for five years, working previously at Ryerson University, and brings more than 25 years of experience with construction projects. She is excited to be part of this redevelopment project, which will help improve the campus and offer innovative new spaces for learning.
“We want to provide students with an environment that inspires optimal learning,” Ms. Massie says. “Our goal is to enrich the student experience by providing exceptional spaces that support them on their educational journey.”
Once complete, Havergal’s new spaces of occasion—those that can be adapted to suit the needs of the day—will accommodate many different activities and learning styles. “The traditional classrooms of previous generations, with desks and chairs lined up facing the teacher, are a thing of the past,” says Ms. Massie. For example, art and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) facilities will incorporate modular furniture that can be configured for today’s teaching methods, resulting in more collaborative spaces.
Havergal’s Master Plan will see the addition of 48,000 square feet of space, split between the Junior School and the Upper School. Ms. Massie says the new buildings are targeting both LEED® Gold and Toronto Green Standard certification, which involves significant investment in energy efficiency, insulation, water use and many other ‘invisible’ standards of construction.
